The year is 1967 and Christie Laume is living the dream in Paris after her brother\u00a0Th\u00e9o Sarapo marries French musical legend \u00c9dith Piaf. \u00a0<em>\u201cSuddenly because of them, I was living a life of a celebrity without being one.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this first track, Laume signs about being an adorable snow lady and warns us about\u00a0the dangers of avalanches.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Christie Laume L&#039;adorable femme des neiges (1967)\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"474\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/geo.dailymotion.com\/player.html?video=x9a78v&#038;\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>2. Popsicles and Icicles &#8211; The Murmaids<\/h2>\n<p>Fine, this song isn&rsquo;t all about winter and snow, but it&rsquo;s a damn good song, and now I want a banana Popsicle.\u00a0This one hit wonder by the Murmaids reached #3 on the billboard charts on December 7th 1963.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Jg3HNnNewXs\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Jg3HNnNewXs<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>3. Tant que la neige &#8211; Philippe B<\/h2>\n<p>From his debut self-titled solo album,\u00a0here&rsquo;s a wonderfully sombre winter themed folk\u00a0balade from Rouyn-Noranda&rsquo;s own <a title=\"Philippe B\" href=\"https:\/\/philippeb.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Philippe B<\/a>. I&rsquo;ve been following Philippe since his little cousin showed me Gwenwed&rsquo;s first album when I was in high school. I swear, it sounded better in French. This bubbly track by France&rsquo;s 1960&rsquo;s hit-maker Jacques Dutronc was co-written by the french comic book writer Fred. Demain l&rsquo;hiver &#8211; Robert Charlebois<\/h2>\n<p>This one just had to be here. Robert Charlebois is a little bit (ok, a lot bit) of a legend in the Qu\u00e9bec music scene. He&rsquo;s a real goof with quirky lyrics, a psychedelic attitude and a highly contagious nonchalance (that even\u00a0brought him to record\u00a0with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i-R65yZ2NL0\" target=\"_blank\">Frank Zappa<\/a>\u00a0in 1977). On this track, Charlebois sticks his middle finger to winter and heads south. Moi, j&rsquo;viens du Nord &#8211; Robert Paquette<\/h2>\n<p>Every region&rsquo;s got it&rsquo;s folk anthem. Snowmobile Song &#8211; Stompin&rsquo; Tom Connors<\/h2>\n<p>An ode to <a href=\"http:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/regions\/abitibi\/2014\/12\/16\/001-motoneige-inventee-abitibi-la-reine-j-d-bureau.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">motors<\/a>, winter fun and ladies like only Stompin&rsquo; Tom could\u00a0write! This song is particularly relevant\u00a0now that we&rsquo;ve learnt that the snowmobile <a href=\"http:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/regions\/abitibi\/2014\/12\/16\/001-motoneige-inventee-abitibi-la-reine-j-d-bureau.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">might have been invented in Abitibi<\/a> and a prototype from 1926 might have inspired Joseph-Armand Bombardier (I used a photo of the prototype as this compilations cover).<\/p>\n<p>Also, if you haven&rsquo;t heard Stompin&rsquo; Tom&rsquo;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_daW8pWibZ4\" target=\"_blank\">Movin&rsquo; on to Rouyn<\/a><\/em>\u00a0on the excellent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ventedegaragepodcast.blogspot.ca\/2013\/08\/la-117-est-trop-longue-la-compilation.html\" target=\"_blank\">compilation that the <em>Vente de garage<\/em> blog put out before the FME<\/a>\u00a0in 2013, do it, now.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stompin&#039; Tom Connors - Snowmobile Song\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SeBCmDQTavU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And now for your French humour break:<em><br \/>\n<\/em><em>Comment t&rsquo;appelle une motoneige prostitu\u00e9e?\u00a0Une skidoune.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>13 +\u00a014. Saint Skidoo +\u00a0Le Doux Renard &#8211; Illustration (from the\u00a0Apr\u00e8s Ski soundtrack)<\/h2>\n<p>In 1971, a maple syrup porn called <a title=\"Apr\u00e8s Ski\" href=\"http:\/\/lesdisquespluton.com\/en\/apres-ski-en\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Apr\u00e8s ski<\/em> <\/a>from Qu\u00e9bec was released.\u00a0It is still the only film in Qu\u00e9bec to be banned by a tribunal. The soundtrack, recorded in Montreal in 1970, has always has an aura of mystery around it. Who was the phenomenal band that recorded the holy grail of Qu\u00e9bec funk?<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward 40 years and the mystery has finally been solved by a guy from Rouyn. F\u00e9lix B. Desfoss\u00e9 and his label, <a title=\"Pluton Records\" href=\"http:\/\/lesdisquespluton.com\/en\/apres-ski-en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pluton Records<\/a>, revealed in 2010 that the genius that composed and performed these incredibly groovy tracks was John Ranger and his larger than life funk band <a title=\"Maple Syrup Funk\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mcgilldaily.com\/2011\/02\/maple-syrup-funk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Illustration<\/em><\/a>.
